Guided Wine Tasting: An Aussie Affair
Our next Maxwell Alley guided wine tasting will focus on the fabulous wines of Australia, led by two of our favorite producers! Hamish Thomson and Tim Smith will be in Jersey City for one night only, and we are thrilled to welcome them to Maxwell Alley for a delicious Sunday evening tasting.
Hamish Thomson’s family has been growing grapes and producing stellar wine in the Grampians region of Victoria for generations. Best’s Great Western, the family’s estate, is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year. They produce a wide variety of award-winning wines, from complex Riesling, to sparkling wine to red Pinot Meunier, to Shiraz produced from some of the country’s oldest vines.
Tim Smith is one of the Barossa Valley‘s most respected winemakers, with over 30 vintages under his belt working at a variety of wineries. Since the early 2000s, he has also produced a small amount of excellent Rhone-inspired wines from top-notch sites. His wines, produced from Shiraz, Mataro, Grenache, walk a perfect line between the sumptuous opulence of the Barossa and the food-friendly elegance of France.
In addition to multiple flights of wines from both wineries (including a rare back-vintage bottle or two pulled from the cellar), the kitchen at Maxwell Alley will be sending out some delicious bites to accompany the bold flavors of Australian terroir.

Autumn Walkaround Wine Tasting
The last Saturday in September will feature something new for wine lovers in Jersey City!
The wine team at CoolVines & Maxwell Alley often attend trade tastings presented by various wine importers. It’s an excellent way to taste a wide variety of wines at once to inform our buying decisions and wine list curation.
On Saturday, September 26th, we are recreating the vibe of an industry tasting for you! We have asked several of our closest import partners to join us and pour dozens of wines from around the world for you to sample. There will be classic regions like Champagne, Burgundy and Piedmont, along with surprises from regions, grapes and producers you may never have tried before.
In addition to multiple tasting “stations” featuring our favorite wines, we will also pour a variety of excellent vermouths, amari and aperitif liqueurs to help inspire your next spritz creation.
The kitchen at Maxwell Alley will serve some light appetizers that will pair perfectly with the wines.
We will have all featured wines available for purchase at the tasting at special retail pricing. Your admission to the tasting will include a $15 credit toward the purchase of featured wines.
